Every Light in the House Burnin'

by mojacar @ Sunday, Nov. 08, 2009 - 17:53:47

By Andrea Levy. A very interesting book, Dad came to England on boarrd the empire Windrush from Jamca via America in 1948. It tells how the family settled into English life. This particular family settled in London.

I can remember the people coming from the West Indies to work in England, and been told "to have nothing to do with them" by my mother. My mum, a "good Methodist" changed her mind when they started attending a nearby Church, filling both the Church and its coffers, making it the richest Church in the Circuit. In later years, she would go to see the Leeds West Indian Carnival, only to be lifted on to the floats by some of her new friends, she continued to do this until well into her late 70s.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading her book, "Small Island".....exploring similar themes....delightfully honest style! ;)

Yes, I shall be keeping a look out at the Library for her other books.

I am doing quite well at working my way through Paulo Coelho books.

The last book choice of my Readers Group was "Perfume", I was quite happy with it, but then it turned out to have a surprising and chilling ending! Got lulled into a false sense of security!

We have had our Readers Group Meeting, there were six of us, three had finished Perfume and three had not - but were going to. We didn't dare tell them what the ending was, because you just don't see it coming.

Novembers' choice is:The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. I have had a quick flick through, I don't think its my sort of book, but will read it anyway!

The book sounds interesting and so is the tale about your Mother.
