Great holiday reads needed

by brokendownangel @ Sunday, Jun. 28, 2009 - 07:37:03

I am looking to buy some fabulous holiday reads in most genres really. I don't like books with too much referencing and i am not keen on horrors. Love thrillers, detective novels, mysteries, would like to get into some good historical works though, and i don't mind a bit of chic lit but too much becomes boring. I also really love GOOD childrens books now. If anyone can recommend anything I would be really grateful.

Am reading Mr Toppit at the moment and have bought I coriander to take, so will report back on them in a few weeks time x

My own favourite genre is the historical whodunnit. Ignoring 'Cadfael' you could try anything by Michael Jecks.

I would love to buy freke castle and party til dawn there every weekend but it is far too run down! We rent our house and i want to buy one somewhere but houses that are big enough to suit us and in the right location in town come up rarely x I will take those photos for you, but it is unlikely to be until after our holiday, but you have put it in my mind now x

Hate to be the one to blow my own trumpet BUT you could take a look at Inner Space by me Merlin Fraser.
A detective murder mystery with a Paranormal twist. Available through Amazon or you get a signed copy direct via my web site
www.Merlin-Fraser.com

The Good German by Jospeh Canon is very good, although I would highly recommend The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Both of these are good thrillers/mysteries. Also, anything by Jane Rogers is a good holiday read.

When are you going lovey?

I would recommend the Cutting Room by Louise Welsh. Check it out on Amazon. I would send it to you but I have given it to another blogger. Very good book indeed.

Another one: Weird Sister - Kate Pullinger (about a witch in latter day Cambridge). If I have that still I don't mind sending it....

Dark Angel - don't be put off by this title. Slightly chick lit but very well written and very entertaining. Very thick book. You can check all these out on Amazon.

I'm reading the Gargoyle at the moment by Andrew Davidson. A fascinating book

If you have the time check out Fiskardo the fishing port on the northern tip. And the beach that they used for Captain Corelli's Mandolin.......Myrtos (one of the best beaches in the world) Oh and the little port of Asos.....blimey I'm jealous now.

And then Rome - Madam you are spoilt! ;)

The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Nifferneger is a fantastic read and a great love story. It seems a bit complicated at first, because it's told by two people, and jumps backwards and forwards in time sometimes very quickly, but stick with it and you get used to it.

Also, for detective stuff, I can recommend the Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher. The first one is called Storm Front. They have a paranormal element (he's a wizard) but essentially he's a private detective who takes on the stranger cases in Chicago.

Another one you might try is Life of Pi by Yann Martel - it was in all the bestseller lists a while back, and is really quite interesting. It's about a boy who survives a shipwreck and is stuck on a life-raft alone for months, and how he survives. The end is great and really makes you think about what you've read.

Shame books (like everything!) are so expensive over here... I normally buy them from Amazon but they take a while to get delivered to Ireland.

Have read and did indeed love the timetravellers wife, have seen the series Dresden files with harry dresden so may give the books a whirl as i loved the tv show. Read life of pi too - Shame we are on the same wavelength in a way, but any new reads, let me know hun x

Ha! Wow, OK, I obviously need to try a bit harder!

Right. If you want a bit of a mind-fuck, how about The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall? It's about a guy who wakes up and can't remember anything about his life. He soon learns that this has happened to him before, and each time he remembers less. It's a VERY strange book. But I loved it.

In a similar vein is The End of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas, about a woman who finds a copy of a rare novel which is rumoured to be cursed. Anyone who reads it is found dead soon afterwards. Don't worry, it's not like "The Ring", nobody jumps out of the book to kill you or anything, but it's interesting.

Did you know there's a film version of The Time Traveller's Wife coming out?

Jodi Picoult? Always a great source of holiday trash. Try 'My Sisters Keeper' they just turned it in to a film.

I was going to suggest The Time Travellers wife... but you have read it, soooo have you read any Sarah Waters? I think you would like Night Watch it's set in post war London and moves backwards through time and you discover how the characters are tied together. However any of her books are good.

John Connolly is also brilliant.

If you want some funny, vampire kind of books, check out mary janice davidson, the betsy series....i think with your sense of humour, you will find them light relief :)

The Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay. There are four books so far... Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dearly Devoted Dexter, Dexter in the Dark and Dexter by Design.

I've read the firs three and they are all fantastic. Very worth a read. Much better than the TV series.

Plenty of advice there for you......just go 'browing' in a 'bookshop' -- dust covers can give you a very good 'sense' of what's inside...
BTW...I notice you did not comment on Milly's reference to 'Harry Potter'....I read ALL of them...and he sits next to the likes of quite 'BIG' men and women...I can assure you...;)

I am reading a pair of good books just now by Thom Madley - Marco's Pendulum and Marco and The Blade of Night.

I totally love anything by Phil RIckman (the grown up Thom Madley) and his Merrily Watkins series are well worth the read.

For some chicklit with bite try Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series - she is a witch who shares a house with a vampire, a pixy, his wife and twenty odd kids.

Might be a bit late now but try 'a Widow for a year' by John Irving

Tragic, comic and some wonderful characters.

If you like chick lit you would probably like Adele Parks books. There is also Anita Shreve books. Both of these are holiday type reading.

If you have time, pop into your nearest charity shop, i buy loads of books for a £1.00 and under - if I am going mad I can pay up tp £2.50 for a well illustrated "coffe table" book. Doint it this way, you can buy authors to "try them out". Most of the books go back to a different charity shop - just keep on re-cycling!

CJ Samson's Tudor detective novel Dissolution is quite good fun and if you like a bit of magic try Susannah Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell

Sarum by Edward Rutherford is a good read for a historical setting, if the Ice Age to present day doesn't grap you, there is always London and Russia by the same author.

Chic lit,,,I don't go for this gendre but Joanna Harris is very good. Maybe a little repetative, espeially the religion theme that does travel through her books.
