Half of a Yellow Sun

by subville @ Friday, Aug. 01, 2008 - 01:08:19

I haven't even finished it and I want to recommend it :))

book cover

This is set in Nigeria during the civil war in the 60's and is told from the viewpoint of a wealthy couple's house boy. I feel like I know the characters and I'll grieve when it's on the last page.

Bloody fascinating. I don't wanna put it down. Only resting when my eyes hurt.

It covers so many intricate details of Biafran life, I think it helped me to read about this now ... If you think our government is squeezing every last drop out of us check out what these people lived and died in. I think it will help you be able to cope with life in the UK.

I want to read history books now, talk to people who lived there.

My review doesn't do this service so HERE is a link with better ones :D

Sounds good. I have seen it in the shops but after reading the Empress Orchid books and A Thousand Splendid Suns I was all 'realitied' out. I think you have changed my mind - if I see it again, I shall give it a read.

I briefly spoke to my aunt about it when she phoned the other night. Her in-laws were evacuated fortunately, but some died cos they were conscripted. My uncle was studying here when it started so didn't go home till it was over. She says they still talk of it there.

I want to read more. Luckily the writer included a lot of other book names at the end of the book, as she realised it would stir up some research in others.

A Thousand Splendid Suns looks good too. I've been eyeing that for a while :D
