Nightwatch by Sergei Lukyanenko

by Shipscook @ Thursday, Jun. 26, 2008 - 18:11:18

One of the great things about holidays is the chance to catch up on your reading.

I had been looking forward to reading this book for a while and it didn't let me down, despite the sleeve note calling it a Russian JK Rowling. Harry Potter this isn't - its adult. Anton is a low grade magician in the Night Watch, a band of Others (witches, shape shifters and vampires) on the side of light, pitted against the Day Watch (the same but acting on behalf of darkness) In the book Anton falls in love, gets partnered with witch in the body of a snowy owl, changes sex, hunts a rogue vampire killer while under suspicion of the same crimes and discovers a plot to change the world order.

The action is fast paced and well imagined as are the various different agents of light and dark, especially the leader of the Day Watch the fabulous Zabulon.

Cook recommends.

Have you seen the film probably based on this book? I wonder how it compares! :)

Seen most of the first film on film4 last night. Covers the first of the three parts of the novel and from what Brad says the next film covers some of the other material from it, so must see Day watch and read the book of that too.

This is high up on my list of stuff to read. It's in my Amazon wishlist but nobody has bought it for me yet!

I saw the film years ago, and only discovered it was based on a book when the second film came out. If it's better than the film (as most books are), it must be fantastic!

I haven't seen either of the films yet (must do that now), but can't wait to read the Day Watch and Twilight Watch follow ups

Ordered it yesterday, hope it gets here soon! Amazon also lists a fourth book, The Last Watch... that's a new one, I'd not heard of it before.

By the way, your synopsis describes the first two films, so I'll be interested to see what's in the second book...

Saw most of the first film on Film4 last night (TV has started to go on the blink) , the film only seems to cover the first of the three parts of the novel, so much more stuff in the book.
