The secret gospel of Mary Magdalene by Michèle Roberts

This novel is about the discovery of a fifth gospel, written by Mary Magdalene herself. It is written in the first person, in the style of a gospel, it describes her meeting with Jesus and becoming his lover/wife and the child she bears. It challenges the belief that she was a whore and the fact that she is an important character in the life of Jesus, something which is often ignored by religion in general. It is a dramatic vision of Christianity where men and women's spirituality are equally celebrated. Less than 180 pages long, it is passionate, meaningful and a moving chronicle of human faith which endures suffering and loss.

Definitely well worth reading, I was hooked from the first page. Even if you don't believe in religion or are very religious (I am not) it is well worth reading just for the story alone.

I have read countless books on the Magdalene and find her a fascinating subject matter. I am also aware of her major influence in early Christianity and how the Church Fathers denounced her to keep women 'in their place'. I feel she should be recognised by the papacy and have the falsity of being a 'fallen women' lifted from her character.

i agree. Like you I have been fascinated with her character and the potrayal by the church. the more I read about her the more interested I become:)

I read the 'secrets of Mary Magdalene' but I was disappionted. However, the book says that she was not the fallen woman. Given that the book was bulky, i expected more stuff from research and findings. curious to read this one now.

I never believed that Mary Magdalene was a fallen woman, always believed that she was made out to be that way as priests have wanted Jesus to be 'pure' and didn't want women to have opinions - well that is my belief. It is a good book and makes you think:)
