I'm not really sure if there's much point in asking as there's hardly anyone in this group, but have any of you read War and Peace? I want to be able to say I've read it
and I tend to like Russian literature anyway, but I was just wondering what other people thought if they'd read it.

I have to admit I haven't, both for it's size and because I don't really feel it'd be my kind of story...
Part of me wants to though, just because it's a "classic"!

I've read about one centimetre!![]()
I have read Anna Karenina and Crime & Punishment, and both are excellent books!

Ah yes, those are both also on my list. I finished The Idiot recently and really liked it, so Dostoevsky is now one of my favourite authors.
Wow. A centimetre is actually quite a lot. I'm guessing its not bad then?

The war bits put me off. Suppose I should try again!

I read it and it's terrible.
I bought it because it was only a quid at a local Bargain Books store and knew that if I didn't read it I would at least have fuel to keep me warm for a month if I was ever lost in the woods.
Anyway, I personally felt that Tolstoy spent much of the "war" side being very boring (imagine Tolkien's battle passages without elves, trolls or orcs, etc) and also very hypocritical as he criticises various people who dissected the war and battle plans after the fact before doing the exact same thing himself.
The chapters concerning the more everyday stuff (the household relations, drama, love and more) are quite good but I was very disappointed overall.
I will probably be ostracised for saying that but ho hum.
